Gum Aesthetics Treatment Process

How does it work?

Aesthetic gum treatment can repair a lack of gum tissue through tissue sculpting or extend the tooth with crown lengthening. These two procedures are recommended for patients to improve the appearance of their smiles with minimally invasive techniques. Tissue sculpting is performed using a minimally invasive microsurgical technique. Dentist repairs gum recession often without the need for a tissue graft. Crown lengthening exposes more of the tooth for patients who have a gummy smile. Dentist will balance the gum tissue and teeth by reshaping the gum and bone tissue. While both of these procedures are intended to correct aesthetic problems, they can also prevent other dental problems from arising in the future.

What is gum contouring?

This procedure uses specialized tools or a laser to perform ablation, which removes excess gum tissue growing over the teeth. Today, laser-based procedures have been gaining more momentum, as the technology helps seal the tissue to reduce bleeding, creates a more precise shape and better targets hollowed areas or pockets where bacteria can congregate. For health reasons, gum contouring slows the progression of tooth decay. For patients with periodontal disease, removing the excess tissue can limit its recurrence.

Pink aesthetic types

A single method is not applied in gum aesthetics, also called Pink Aesthetics. There are different techniques and treatment processes used for different problems.

Gingivectomy (Gum Contouring): The process of removing excess gums in areas where gingival growth and deep pockets are formed. The gums are leveled and the patient is given an aesthetic appearance.

Gingivoplasty: The method applied to correct excessive gingiva or asymmetric leveling. A more aesthetic appearance is obtained with complementary prosthetic treatments (Lamina, Zirconia etc.).

What to expect?

Periodontists now use lasers to cut away the excess gum tissue that can make your teeth appear short and create a "gummy smile." This allows the procedure to be only about an hour with minimal pain, a short recovery time, and no stitches or bleeding. Local anesthetic is placed on the gums before the surgery to help you not feel any pain.

After Care

After the surgery, you should take a day or two off. Limit your activities as much as possible. Your gums will take some weeks to heal, but that does not mean you should just stay home without going to work. You can get back to work as soon as a day or two.

Your dentist will give you some instructions to follow during the healing time. Ensure to follow them seriously. These tips can help you reduce the discomfort associated with the surgery.

Take the painkillers as prescribed by your dentist. Don't apply aspirin on the gums, thinking it will reduce the pain because it can't. It will only make things worse.

Eat foods such as pasta, cottage, yogurt, ice cream, and other soft foods. Avoid foods with lots of spice or hard foods until your gums heal.Follow your dentist's techniques for brushing teeth. How you brush your teeth can affect the healing process. Call your dentist in case of any complications, such as excessive bleeding or swelling.
